Io

Io is another Galileo moon that orbits around Jupiter. It is the innermost moon and has the least amount of water of any astronomical object in our solar system. The moon is named after Io, the priestess who was a partner of Zeus.

Io is the third largest of the four Galilean moons. It is the most active volcanic world in the solar system and has hundreds of volcanoes on its surface. Some of the eruptions on this moon are so powerful that they can be observed from Earth using a telescope.

It is slightly bigger than Earth’s Moon and about a quarter of the diameter of Earth. It orbits around 262,000 miles (422,000 K) from Jupiter and is constantly pulled between Jupiter’s huge gravity field and the lesser ones of Ganymede and Europa.

Io is a bizarre moon and has been described as a world of fire and ice. The average surface temperature is around minus 202 Fahrenheit (130 C). It is so cold that there are snowfields of sulfur dioxide. But there is another side to Io, and the temperature of its volcanoes can reach 3,000 Fahrenheit (1,649 C). There are also lakes of molten lava dotted around the surface.

Trivia

It has a very thin atmosphere, with at least nine volcanoes erupting at any one time.
